This is Hendrik, 31 years old. He grew up 500 metres from the Elbe beach and had his first tiller in his hand at the age of 7. In his youth he took part in regatta sailing, where he aimed to be as fast as possible to win the race. But later, he would actually prefer to leave the pressure to perform on land – since then, Hendrik has seen sailing as a way to get closer to the people on board and the nature around them. And to get around in an ecological way. After graduating from high school in 2011, he worked as a paramedic for two years before studying medicine in Riga and Lübeck. He has been a registered doctor since 2021 and currently works at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf. reSAILience offers him the opportunity to combine both passion and profession.
Although Tjada (she/her) learnt to love sailing on the Berlin lakes, she was soon drawn to the open sea. In the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and elsewhere, she was not only able to fulfil her desire for freedom, but also learn all the finesses of sailing. It came as it had to and she began to work as a skipper alongside her medical studies and "instil" the joy of sailing in other people. For Tjada, the best moment on a sailing trip is when all the participants hug each other at the end after a week of intensive living together on the ship and wonder how they are suddenly supposed to be back on dry land.
As a native of the Palatinate, Philipp had his first sailing experience at the age of 12 at an Opti regatta on the Neckar. Although it had to be cancelled due to a calm, this experience did not dampen his enthusiasm for sailing. Even though he still sometimes believes that he can always get a knot or two of speed out of his sailing trim thanks to his physics degree, he is not really interested in sporting ambition. Because he feels real joy when his passion for sailing suddenly spreads to others. Since 2017, the self-confessed warm weather enthusiast has preferred to skipper in the Mediterranean, but doesn't shy away from the vast Atlantic either. In addition to the experience of nature, the special sense of community is what he finds most appealing about sailing adventures. As a doctor, Philipp is fascinated by the idea of reSAILience e.V. to help people with illnesses to have exciting and meaningful experiences through sailing.
Jatayu's passion for sailing began in Hamburg on a small lake where he sailed Opti. He obtained his sports boat licence at the age of 15 and has been sailing whenever he gets the chance ever since. With reSAILience, he wants to introduce other people to the unique sailing experience. After graduating from high school, Jatayu worked in retail for four years and then studied law with a focus on labour and social law in Hamburg and Seattle. Since the summer of 2022, he has been completing his legal clerkship with stations at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the district court and the public prosecutor's office in Halle (Saale), among others.
Kilian gained his first sailing experience in his youth as a weekend sailor on a lake in Upper Bavaria. Since 2020, he has sailed on the Mediterranean several times and always felt immediately at home on the boats. In addition to the sporting aspect of reaching a destination either with or against the external conditions, what impresses him most about sailing is the unique group feeling on board, which he wants to share through his commitment to reSAILience e.V. He is currently in the process of making the practical skills he has already learnt official through boating licences and sailing courses so that he will hopefully soon be able to skipper his first trip for reSAILience e.V. himself. Kilian is 28 years old and is studying medicine and philosophy in Munich.
Although sailing is relatively new territory for Larissa, she was immediately enthusiastic about the idea of reSAILience. Accordingly, she did not hesitate for long to become part of the team. In addition to the adventure and the time on the water, Larissa finds the community that is created on board while sailing unique and wonderful. Outside of reSAILience, Larissa is also passionate about people in all their facets and works as a psychologist with a doctorate in science.
In his childhood and youth, Lorenz got to know sailing as a wonderful way to go on holiday and be on the move. In connection with boat and crew, sea and wind, challenges have to be mastered and the most beautiful harbours, bays and nature discovered. He obtained sailing licences during his studies and later found sailing to be a beneficial balance to his work as a doctor. His favourite way to do this is as a skipper with friends and a constantly growing sailing community. At reSAILiance, he can contribute a lot of experience, knowing how to deal with a wide variety of situations. After years of doctoral work and further training as an anaesthetist and emergency doctor, he now organises patient repatriation transports, is an instructor for outdoor first aid courses and is enthusiastic about many a project.
Nele is a midwife and lives in Karlsruhe. She discovered her love of sailing in 2018, when she stepped onto a sailing boat for the first time in her life after a serious illness with a long, intensive therapy phase. She experienced sailing as a great opportunity to rediscover the strength of her own body and to really feel herself, surrounded by water, wind and waves. This experience was pure happiness for her, which is why it didn't stop after that first trip! For Nele, being part of reSAILience e.V. means making this valuable experience possible for others affected and thus sharing her enthusiasm for sailing.
For the first time, Julian stood on deck on a lake in the south of Munich at the beginning of his medical studies in 2021. This experience left a lasting impression on him. In addition to his passion for sailing, his work in oncology also brought him to reSAILience. With us, he can not only share his enthusiasm for sailing but also has the valuable opportunity to connect with affected individuals to jointly enhance their sense of self-efficacy. Since we cannot change the wind, let us set the sails differently!
Nele’s enthusiasm for sailing was sparked by a class trip in the 8th grade, deepened by a university sailing course, and then became unstoppable through small sailing adventures on the Elbe River in Hamburg. This is not surprising, as besides sailing, Nele is mainly outdoors in other activities as well. The dynamics that arise when traveling in groups seem to have a unique magic for her. People who were previously strangers become close acquaintances through bonding experiences within a few days. Before her path led her to healthcare and speech therapy, Nele spent years in youth work with the Scouts and, in particular, trained as an experiential educator, focusing on concepts that bring people together and expand personal comfort zones. From the beginning, Nele appreciated the resource-oriented perspective of reSAILience. She sees sailing itself as a promising tool to combine experiencing expanded comfort zones and strengthening resilience. Thus, Nele initially contributes to the club’s work by developing concepts to accompany the sailing trips.
